In the 7th century, the Tang Dynasty introduced the world's first paper currency, known as "flying cash", which was like promissory notes or bills of exchange. This innovation replaced cumbersome coins and precious metals. Later around the 11th century, the Song Dynasty was the one that introduced the first true government-issued paper currency, called Jiaozi.
