Tune into our webinar series, SIAM MPE Community Meetings, organized by the SIAM Activity Group on Mathematics of Planet Earth: [ Ссылка ].
This presentation was led by Nan Chen, University of Wisconsin-Madison, who discussed Lagrangian tracers that follow a parcel of fluid's movement.
In this video, Lagrangian tracers are drifters or floaters that follow a parcel of fluid's movement. These Lagrangian trajectories are widely used as observations, combined with dynamical or statistical models, to recover the underlying flow field. This is known as Lagrangian data assimilation.
The first part of the talk covers the general methodology for Lagrangian data assimilation, including ensemble data assimilation and a mathematical framework that provides analytically solvable solutions. The second part focuses on the uncertainty in Lagrangian data assimilation, covering topics such as quantifying information gain in state estimation, eddy identification under uncertainty, and the optimal design for deploying additional tracers to reduce uncertainty.
