Sichuan province gets more than 80 percent of its electricity from hydropower but because of the heatwave and drought, the water volume of its main rivers has dropped by 50% as compared to the same period in 2021. The hydroelectric power generation capacity has also dropped by the same amount from about 900 million KWH to about 450 million KWH. To guarantee residential power supplies, Sichuan's capital Chengdu, is rationing power to reduce the consumption.
