The question of hardness and abrasion resistance has been popping up a lot lately. Here’s the best, non-papered, explanation we can give:
Compressive strength relates to the pressure required to make a compound break. 4,500psi is the average concrete hardness polishers prefer. The compressive strength isn’t necessarily related to the polish, but the harder the better.
Abrasion resistance relates to the pressure required to scratch a compound. 5-6 is the average abrasion resistance polishers prefer to have as a beginning resistance.
Psi, as relates to polishers, is less important than abrasion resistance. The resistance of a surface to lose sand particles or cement paste means a tighter, and more clear polish. The surface being mechanically sound (because the hard aggregates that make up concrete are present) means the floor wears better.
Overlays are a different matter altogether since they are made in a lab and engineered to give both compressive strength and excellent abrasion resistance.
