According to latest reports 24 out of the 40 people have been declared dead in the tragic incident of a boat capsizing in the Ganga river in Bihar's Patna on Saturday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of those deceased and Rs 50,000 for those seriously injured.
People had gathered at Patna's Ganga Diara to witness a three-day long kite festival which is held every year on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. The vessel, which had taken people for a free ride from the ganga ghat, had been reportedly overcrowded and capsized as a result.
Three teams from the National Disaster Response Force are assisting in the rescue operations. The survivors are being treated at the Patna Medial College & Hospital.
