OUR FEATURED INSPIRATORS FOR THIS SESSION:
1. Jamila Bargach, Morocco – biggest Fog Harvest project in the world:
Jamila Bargach is an activist and scholar who has dedicated her life to serving under-resourced communities in Southwest Morocco, creating sustainable initiatives through education and scientific innovation. She is the co-founder of Dar Si Hmad, which operates the largest functioning fog collection project in the world, a system which fosters the independence of Amazigh women in Ait Baamrane, a Berber region, by delivering potable water to their households.
Bargach, an anthropologist by training with a PhD from Rice University, has taught at University Mohamed V in Rabat. She spent decades as a human rights activist helping residents in slums and informal communities in Morocco. In 2006, Bargach founded a shelter for women in Casablanca, which she directed till 2016.
2. Ralph Borland, Cape Town, SA: African Robots & SPACECRAFTS:
Ralph Borland is an artist, curator and interdisciplinary knowledge worker based in Cape Town, South Africa. His projects African Robots and SPACECRAFT are collaborations with street wire artists in Southern Africa to introduce electronics and mechanics to their practice.
Their monumental electro-mechanical music-making spaceship sculpture Dubship I – Black Starliner was launched at the Zeitz MOCAA in 2019. In 2020, Ralph Borland Studio completed two public artworks for the City of Cape Town.
Ralph has a degree in Fine Art from the University of Cape Town, and a Masters in Interactive Telecommunications from New York University.
3. Musinguzi Mark Musiimenta, Uganda: Founder of Hya Bioplastics, Africa’s first biotechnology startup:
Creativity has driven Mark to found Hya Bioplastics, Africa’s first biotechnology startup that’s fully focused on developing biodegradable packaging from re-engineered plant fibers.
Mark is a Mechanical Engineer that’s extremely passionate about creating and delivering sustainable life-changing products in the hands of millions of people. He is currently based in Kampala, Uganda.
During his 3rd year while at Makerere University, he founded a startup called Wet Technik that saw an opportunity to effectively treat and recycle wastewater using nature-based constructed wetland technologies. He was able to pilot these systems in various locations across Uganda and this has provided a much-needed low-cost wastewater treatment solution.
