In a major breakthrough, the Qatari court has accepted the appeal document of 8 ex-Navy officials, sources familiar with the matter said. The development came after the Indian Govt filed an appeal document against the death penalty awarded to former Navy personnel. MEA, on Nov 9, stated that the judgment remains “confidential”, adding that the appeal was filed in the case. The MEA actively coordinated with the Qatari authorities and secured consular access on November 7. Further, EAM S Jaishankar has also met with the family members of the former naval personnel who have been sentenced. Earlier, the Court of First Instance of Qatar passed a verdict of death penalty for the eight former naval officers who were detained in Doha. The ex-Navy officials were imprisoned in Qatar since October 2022 and were accused of allegedly spying on a submarine program.
