Colleagues of Al Jazeera Journalist Respond to News of Her Death in West Bank
There were somber scenes at the Al Jazeera office in Ramallah, West Bank, after one of the broadcaster’s journalists, Shireen Abu Akleh, was fatally killed while reporting on an Israeli raid at a refugee camp in Jenin.
Footage streamed live by Quds News Network shows journalists mourning the loss of Abu Akleh who had been with the outlet since 1997.
Speaking to Quds News, journalist Reem Omari said: “Every Palestinian home knows her because she entered the screen of every Palestinian home 25 years ago.”
“There are no words. Words fail,” she said.
“What happened today is the assassination of a journalist wearing a helmet, a journalist wearing a bulletproof vest. What happened to colleague Shireen is an assassination,” said journalist Shawasha Mohammed.
