Many times I get asked why I keep my orchids in some types of media, when other people keep them in completely different medias with no problems. Well it all has to do with environment and external factors.
With media all we are trying to achieve is a balance between airiness and moisture in a pot, suited for growing orchids in a home. It's not that orchid need media to survive, but it makes out lives a lot easier with them and keeps orchids healthier if by chance we don't have time to water as often as we should.
Different types of media can work well in some environments and terrible in others. Sphagnum moss is great in very dry environments, as it can hold on to a lot of water. In a humid or cooler environment it can be catastrophic. On the opposite end, lava rock is ideal for very humid environments as it doesn't hold in too much water, but if used in dry environments most probably it will retain as much moisture as a coin.
As long as media is not toxic and doesn't suffocate roots, it really doesn't matter what it is, as long as it suits the environment and the orchid. What works for you might not work for other people and vice versa, so the best thing to do is to analyze your environment and make a decision based on your needs.
