We look at the transition process for those moving their courses from Moodle 1.9 to the latest Moodle 2.4 using the Backup and Restore route. Part 1 of 2 of this tutorial video looks at backing up of your course on Moodle 1.9 server.
At least Course Creator level access is required to create a course backup.
NOTE: Courses created in 1.9 can be backed up and then restored into a 2.1 Moodle or later but blocks are not currently restored and nor is user data (such as forum posts, grades, submissions etc)
