Those who are looking for an amazing spiritual journey in Bali, Melukat is one of interesting traditions worth experiencing.
Meaning 'to cleanse or to purify', Melukat is a ritual to purify our body, mind and soul from negative emotions. The ritual is conducted by a Balinese priest and normally taking place in a river, lake, pond or anything with water element.
As the ceremony begins, the priest will start to deliver prayers and mantras to God. Each participant will be given offerings that usually contain flowers in a woven coconut leaf with incense. The ritual continues by immersing our body into the pond. At this point, the participant has to take some sips of the water as a symbol of washing away all the bad elements that reside in our body and mind, while at the same time to invite good things and positivity.
At the last ritual, the participants will be sprinkled with holy water and asked to drink the water three times. As soon as the procession is completed, the participants are expected to experience a soul refreshment and wonderful feelings.
Some conditions and rules apply to perform the ceremony. Women in menstrual period or just recently gave birth, those who just lost their loved ones or tragedies, are prohibited to perform the ceremony as they are considered as impure.
