Our Xfinity Arris XB2 gateway crapped out on us, so we decided to eliminate the monthly indefinite hardware rental fee, and replaced it with our own more powerful dedicated Netgear cable modem and dedicated Wi-Fi Netgear Nighthawk router combo.
Both units are identified as 'Xfinity compatible' on their boxes. They are easy-ish to setup and I show you how I did it. THIS CAN SAVE YOU UPWARDS OF $600 over the run of a 10 year service agreement!

This specific video isn't necessarily a review for the Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 (r7000) "gaming" wifi router and the Netgear CM500 cable modem -- I'm just showing you how to setup the modem and router. I'll show you how to disconnect your ISP provided gateway router (in my case, an Arris XB2 that I had to rent each month from Xfinity. I'll also show you how to hook up the modem, then the router, and how to use the Xfinity website to activate the modem, and then how to use the Netgear Nighthawk app to activate the AC1900 WIFI router. We ended up saving approximately $10 a month on the hardware rental of the Arris XB2.
Both units are working well, and we have about 16 devices utilizing their signals (not usually all at once), running streaming services like Netflix and Disney+, as well as intense gaming, and mobile devices.
In order to cut your monthly rental bill, READ THIS: Keep in mind, you will have to give your original ISP provided gateway wireless router modem back to Comcast and ask them to credit your bill. You might have to remind them once or twice, too--they are the cable company, after all! It's a hassle, but will save you $$$ in the long run!
You can do it!
