Two hackers, Malone Lam (20) and Jeandiel Serrano (21), were recently arrested for stealing $230 million in cryptocurrency. They used sophisticated social engineering techniques to compromise the accounts of a single victim, a creditor of the bankrupt crypto lender Genesis. They posed as Google and Gemini support to trick the victim into giving them access to sensitive information, including private keys, which they then used to steal over 4,100 Bitcoin.
The stolen cryptocurrency was quickly laundered through multiple exchanges and wallets, with some of it spent on luxury items such as international travel, luxury cars, and designer goods. The investigation, led by the FBI and assisted by blockchain investigators like ZachXBT, is still ongoing, with over $9 million in funds already frozen. Both men face serious charges related to conspiracy, theft, and money laundering.
