On my first day at Ol Pej, we stumbled onto a fresh lion kill - an African buffalo! - which is a pretty impressive takedown by three lionesses. We spent four days essentially camping out for hours to see how things unfolded. This was a beautiful immersive experience and an amazing insight into animal behavior around a lion kill. Tips from my trip:
Hands down, the BEST safari company in Kenya! Staying with Kicheche (Laikipia Ol Pejeta and Valley Camp, Maasai Mara) is my favorite safari experience of all time! Other places claim ‘luxury’ experiences, this one actually delivers! The lodging, food, service, location, and animal diversity and density are all amazing and make Kicheche camps your best investment.
Kicheche Laikipia Ol Pejeta rocks! Every aspect of the camp and service was extremely thoughtful without being or trying to be pretentious like other lodges/camps. The food, to include the packed breakfasts and sundowners, was consistently good and diverse. Chef Mike was respectful of dietary accommodations, wowed me with flavor, and plated beautiful and well-cooked food. Lunch is served with an exclusive view of the lake where the elephants come to drink and wallow in mud. I stayed 4 nights, but wish I had done longer.
Shoutout to my guide, Peter - he has great insight and sight, like most guides do, and he found some really magical moments for us to enjoy. But I really appreciated his willingness to sit for hours in a single spot. Other guides, at other lodges/camps that I’ve experienced, get fidgety or pushy to move on to see something else in quick succession. I don’t go on safari to check boxes. I take more video than pictures, and like to just sit and watch nature do its thing. And this time I got to return to a lion kill and a hyena den a few days in a row – very cool! I really like the ‘Ugly 5’ and am not disappointed if I don’t see the ‘Big 5’ – for me, it’s all about what they’re doing, and waiting to see what might happen when you’re patient. So having a good guide, like Peter, who respects that and marvels in what we experience makes all the difference. Highly recommend requesting him as your guide.
