Hitori waza (individual exercises) are the fundamental building blocks of Aikido. Practicing these exercises will build movement and coordination skills even when you don’t fully understand what you’re doing.
As you progress, you realize that most Aikido throws are simply combinations of the different individual exercises.
In this video, Randy Thompson demonstrates how two of the exercises are combined to yield one of the throws required on the first belt test.
This is also a useful thought exercise. It will help beginners better understand how to practice and perform these throws. It also gives instructors deeper insight, helping link our practice and ability to articulate ideas to students.
