FLAG LOWERED TO HALF-MAST OUTSIDE OF TORONTO'S CITY HALL
Canada is mourning the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
Outside of Toronto's City Hall, the Canadian flag was lowered to half-mast.
The Queen died Thursday (8 SEPT. 2022) after 70 years on the throne. She was 96.
The palace announced she died at Balmoral Castle, her summer residence in Scotland, where members of the royal family had rushed to her side after her health took a turn for the worse.
"It was with the heaviest of hearts that we learned of the passing of Canada's longest-reigning Sovereign, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. She was a constant presence in our lives - and her service to Canadians will forever remain an important part of our country's history," Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted.
"As we look back at her life and her reign that spanned so many decades, Canadians will always remember and cherish Her Majesty's wisdom, compassion, and warmth. Our thoughts are with the members of the Royal Family during this most difficult time."
Queen Elizabeth II is Canada's head of state and has been so for 45% of the country's existence. She visited Canada 22 times as monarch.
Trudeau first met her as a child when his father, the late Pierre Trudeau, was prime minister.
