I figured I had better make something yesterday, so I made this.
It's part of my video "How to Play a Modular Synthesizer" series, because there's nothing else like playing a modular.
My machine is setup here for a number of separate voices, and I have notes on the video describing what I'm up to when I tweak the knobs.
I'm using four sequencers: an Arturia Beatstep Pro (2 seqs plus drums), a Doboz Prizma and a Doboz XIIO, which is really an arpeggiator.
I start by programming notes on all the sequencers that sound harmonious together.
A Pamela's Workout is the master clock, and it drives all the sequencers.
Sequencer #1 on the BSP drives a Mutable Braids in FM mode that goes into a VCA with an envelope generator.
Seq #2/BSP drives a Mutable Plaits that feeds a VCA with an envelope, a second envelope modulates "model" on the Plaits.
Seq #3 is a Prizma driving a voice made up of a Synth Tech E350 Morphing Terrarium and an Analogue Solutions that mix and go into a Synth Tech E440 filter, which receives cutoff modulation from a Turing Machine. That goes into a VCA/envelope.
Seq #4 is the XIIO which drives a Mutable Rings.
The keyboard (voice #5) controls three oscillators for some fatness: A Tiptop Z3000, an Erica Variable Waveshape VCO and another Braids. They mix and go into an Intellijel Korgasmatron multi-mode filter, actually two filters in series with different filter shapes. The cutoff on the filter gets additional modulation from a Koma Kommander.
The drums are sequenced by the BSP and it triggers a Little Drummer Boy and sounds from an Intellijel Plonk.
Finally, or actually, firstly, I'm using a Qunexus keyboard to trigger a Disting loaded with sound clips that feeds a Dervish dsp.
I recorded eight channels of sound from the modular into Reaper for mixing and output. I needed to make something up today, so I did this.
My favorite thing to do is set up a few sequencers, tuned carefully to specific notes and let them go at each other, with my help.
I have put notes on-screen to let you know what's going on.
I have loaded sound clips on my Disting MK3 and trigger it with a Qunexus keyboard here, and the sound runs thru a Dervish DSP with an algorithm that changes its pitch and feeds some of it back into the incoming path for a cascading change in pitch.
I use a Doboz XIIO arpeggiator to control a Mutable Rings.
A Beatstep Pro controls three things:
Sequence #1 goes to a Mutable Braids into a VCA w envelope control
Sequence #2 goes to a Mutable Plaits into a VCA with envelope control. A second envelope goes to modulate Plaits timbre control
Drums triggers some sounds on a Little Drummer Boy and a Plonk
The clock also drives a Doboz Prizma that controls a two-VCO voice consisting of a Synth Tech E350 Morphing Terrarium oscillator and an Analog Solutions that run thru a Synth Tech E440 Filter whose cutoff is controlled by a Turing machine to semi-randomly change.
The keyboard voice is three VCOs.
