Strategic competition between the United States and China is intensifying, but how is the rest of the world responding to China's rise? Is China's Belt and Road Initiative a 'debt trap' or 'just business'? Is Europe dependent on trade and investment with China? Is the United States behind efforts to build a coalition to counter China in Asia?
As China's global power grows, it faces considerable new risks and challenges. Drawing on examples from East Africa, Latin America, Europe, and East Asia, Luke Patey will discuss how many countries are recognizing that, just as engaging China offers benefits, relations with Beijing can also undermine their independence and competitiveness. In his talk, Patey will explore how the rest of the world is recalibrating its engagement with China and will ultimately play a large role in shaping the reach of Beijing's future global influence.
