Top civilian official Carl Bildt said on Sunday (19/5) Serb leader
Radovan Karadzic appeared to be withdrawing from "public life" in
the Serb Republic.
Bildt's statement came after the Bosnian Serb leader delegated
some of his responsibilities to vice-president Biljana
Plavsic--known for her hardline nationalist views--in a move
viewed by many as his first steps toward relinquishing power.
A spokesman for Bildt, Colm Murphy, said it was the beginning of
the end of Karadzic's influence.

colm murphy, spokesman for un envoy, carl bildt, engsot saying "as
you've seen, the outcome is that karadzic has, if you like, taken
retirement or he'll step out of his political function as a
leader, which is what we have demanded under the terms of the
dayton agreement. and bildt went back to pale late last night to
demand an even stronger language and the message karadzic
broadcast be even clearer";
reporter asking question;
murphy engsot "i don't think he'll have the influence he wants. he
will certainly have influence but this is not a black/white
situation. it's a process. we think it has to be followed up and
nourished. it's something we have to watch. karadzic will
certainly retain some influence but this will be an ongoing
struggle with the international community and what we're trying to
to do with dayton agreement";

murphy engsot "it's a major step forward. we think it's the
beginning of the end of karadzic's political influence";

foolish pursuit of so called racial purity, separatism,
isolationism. mr kasagic stood for more open policy. there are
certainly intend to";
