The Mount Irish Petroglyph Site is a sacred area in Lincoln County, Nevada, with a collection of petroglyphs, which are rock carvings and a form of communication. It is part of the Basin and Range National Monument in the Mt Irish Wilderness and just on the other side of the mountains from the infamous Area 51 and that alien craze. These very old engravings, which are thought to date from the late prehistoric era, were made by the Southern Paiute and other local indigenous peoples (approximately AD 900-1450). Some glyphs appear much older though!
A range of carving styles, including geometric patterns like circles, squares, and lines, as well as more figurative portrayals of animals like bighorn sheep, deer, and rabbits, may be seen at the Mount Irish Petroglyph Site. Additionally, there are symbols that are not as instantly recognizable, such as human figures. By scratching and abrading the dark patina on the light-colored granite surface, the carvings are made. The number 6 seems to come up a lot. Even perhaps a 6-digit hand representation, which is what the legends of ancient giants describe!
Due to the fact that they are etched on tuff, a form of rock that is volcanic ash that has solidified into rock, the petroglyphs at Mount Irish are distinctive. This is distinct from basalt, which is the more typical rock type utilized for petroglyphs. In addition to their size and the amount of detail in some of the designs, the carvings at Mount Irish are noteworthy for both.
“The Mount Irish Archaeological District, is one of the most important archaeological areas in eastern Nevada. The District covers 640 acres and provides a vista of prehistoric rock art and habitation sites, set in a dramatic landscape of tuff (volcanic ash) knolls and outcrops, alluvial fans, and washes. The District is best known for spectacular rock art that portrays the cultural lives of the Native American peoples who used the area some 4,000 years ago to the nineteenth century.” Source: [ Ссылка ]
The surrounding 600 acres, as the 1970’s wooden entrance board states, was designated the Mount Irish Petroglyph Site by the Bureau of Land Management in 1970. These Petroglyphs or (ancient) rock carvings were left by prehistoric American Indians. (Today called indigenous Americans) Indian rock art in Nevada is often interpreted as having magical or religious significance. However, the precise purpose of these petroglyphs remains a mystery.
There are numerous emblems of the Sun and stars on Mount Irish. Petroglyphs depicting the sun and stars, such as a star with many points or a sunburst, are also frequently discovered at petroglyph sites. These images can be used to represent a particular occasion or a way of thinking. It is believed that these site are sacred and were used to record events that were of importance to the indigenous Paiute people whom etched these communications into the rocks surface. It is said they even had designated “sky watchers” which could also explain the abundance of celestial objects on the rock art.
