Christmas Island or Kiritimati is open after being closed for three years!
We were the first group of anglers to fish out of the famous Ikari house since the closure! The fish were plentiful, untouched and hungry. I can't wait to go back in 2024
On the afternoon of day three we fished for Bonefish and Triggerfish on one of the famous flats known as 9 mile. The phrase often heard in fishing is "you should have been here yesterday". Well, it felt like we were fishing a yesterday. The conditions were perfect. Lots of sun for sight fishing, just enough wind to ripple the water making the fish less spooky, and it was at our back along with the sun. Perfect! And of course, this is Christmas Island there are lots and lots of bones. These fish were bigger and less wary after being left alone for 3 years. Dave and I both had the best bonefish fly fishing day of our lives.

Leader = 10 foot, 100lb straight to the fly high quality Fluorocarbon. If you are concerned about loosing a fly line, use a 16 inch 30lb class section from the fly line to the 100lb leader. Connect these with an Albright knot.
Knots to use:
from leader to fly line loop tie a perfection loop in the fluoro
from leader tippet to fly use a Steve huff figure 8 loop or a perfection loop.
Flies:
Giant Trevally - Modified Purple Brush fly. Purple NYAP Popper.
Bluefin Trevally - Small (2.5 inch) Whistler patterns, Small Clousers
Milkfish - Modified green seaweed fly
Bonefish - Christmas Island Special, Modified Christmas Island Special, Modified Spawning shrimp, Bonefish Bitters (root beer colored head)
Trigger - Mark's crab, Modified spawning shrimp
Note - Modified means that they have some material additions that I like to use such as rubber legs or sparkle. The traditional patterns are the base flies and should be used if you are not a tyer.
