What ancient Roman inventions and technologies have impacted the world as we know it today?
The Romans were legendary craftsmen and masters of civil engineering; as a result, their flourishing civilization gave rise to significant leaps forward in the fields of technology, culture, and architecture that were unrivaled for ages.
The Roman army was the best-equipped army in the world two thousand years ago. While architects have learned how to work with stone and concrete, military engineers have learned how to make deadly weapons out of metal and wood. The primary weapon of a Roman foot soldier is a scary sword called a Gladius. It has a double-edged blade about 18 inches long and a sharp point. It was not used to cut but rather to stab and thrust. But if a sword could kill when it was close, their spear, called a Pilum, could do the same when it was far away. It can be thrown around 100 feet with deadly accuracy. Here are some of the ancient roman inventions that changed the world.
Ballistas and Onagers.
Even though the Greeks are credited with inventing the fundamentals of artillery, Rome recognized the potential in improving long-range cannons and capitalized on this chance. Before the troops thoroughly attacked the enemy lines, large artillery pieces like carroballistas and onagers were used to bombard the opposing lines. It was common practice to refer to the manuballista as the most sophisticated two-armed torsion engine ever employed by the Roman army. The weapon frequently resembles a mounted crossbow that can fire projectiles and be found in many different forms. In a similar fashion, the onager was a larger weapon that was capable of flinging massive missiles at walls or forts. It got its name from the wild ass because of the kick it could provide. The Roman military made use of both of these extremely effective pieces of military hardware throughout their time.
