EUS and ERCP are virtually a painless procedure when done under an expert hand. Of course any endoscopy procedure can be a little bit unpleasant if done without sedation and hence these procedures are done by experts under the influence of sedation, which is quite deep. So most of the patients do no recover any unpleasantness after the procedure. Yes, very uncommonly procedures such as EUS and ERCP can lead to unplanned events such as minor discomfort post procedure, which can be in the form of an ache that settles down just by burping some of the air that has been insufflated or at times we may need some painkillers. Very rarely in 3% or less of all ERCP’s people may experience inflammation of the pancreas, called as pancreatitis, this can be avoidable by careful selection of the patients, recognising the problems earlier in appropriate management which your doctor can allure to at the time of the procedure.
