The 2017 National Geographic's 'Nature Photographer of the Year' competition was judged in four categories - wildlife, aerial, underwater and landscapes - with first, second, third, honorable mention and people's choice prizes awarded in each.
The overall winner was announced as Jayaprakash Joghee Bojan of Singapore, who captured “Face to face in a river in Borneo", an image of an orangutan crossing a river in Indonesia’s Tanjung Puting National Park.
The other winners included exotic images captured in Japan, Australia, Hawaii, Romania, the Faroe Islands and Canada. Shots of rainbows meeting the sea at sunset, lava cascading down volcanos, a macaque ape enjoying a head massage and flamingos feeding their young were amongst the highlights of an impressive selection.
