This Pajero was in my workshop to diagnose an engine noise. The engine is making knocking type noise from front timing cover area.
it was failed timing hydraulic tensioner. This is one of the common issues with V6 engines if you don't replace them when replacing the timing belt. This tensioner tensioning procedure can apply for 6G75, 6G74 3.0 l & 3.5L engines. Mitsubishi Pajero, Montero sport, Mitsubishi Magna, Mitsubishi Galant/380.
So, I hope this video helps someone when doing this kind of job.
Torque specs & some important steps below
Special tools-
Pulley holder - Mitsubishi No. MB990767/MB991800.
Pulley holding pins - Mitsubishi No.MD998715/MD991802.
Tensioner tool - Mitsubishi No.MD998767.
Crankshaft sprocket spacer - Mitsubishi No.MD998769.
Special precautions -
Disconnect battery earth lead.
DO NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft when timing belt removed.
Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
Turn engine in normal direction of rotation (unless otherwise stated).
DO NOT turn engine via camshaft or other sprockets.
Observe all tightening torques.
Torque specs -
Hydraulic tensioner bolts - 25NM
Using tool, No.MD998767 and a torque wrench apply a clockwise torque of 4,4 Nm to the tensioner pulley.
Tensioner pulley with two holes - 50NM
crankshaft pulley bolt Tightening torque: 182±4 Nm
