(1 May 2019) The President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa addressed thousands of workers affiliated with the Congress of South African Trade Union on Wednesday in Durban.
Speaking at the Clermont Stadium, Ramaphosa pledged to protect workers' rights and tackle poverty and unemployment.
Ramaphosa's rally came a week before the country's national election, and the president has chosen addressing corruption as one of his key campaign promises.
"Corruption comrades is not only corruption against the state, it is corruption against the people of South Africa," he said.
An opposition party in South Africa is also using May Day to rally voters.
Economic Freedom Fighters members, wearing their signature red shirts and berets, gathered at a stadium in Johannesburg to cheer in support of populist stances that have put pressure on the ruling African National Congress to address issues like economic inequality and land reform.
The EFF has made some South Africans uncomfortable, however, with comments about foreigners and whites.
