Security is tight across Israel as police and security services go on high alert for any possible terror attacks on New Years Eve.
Policemen and soldiers were visible in Jerusalem and the West Bank on Wednesday conducting checks on cars and people's identification papers.
Many people on the streets of the Old City of Jerusalem said they hoped for a more peaceful 2004.
Israeli security forces are preparing for the evening celebrations by securing the centres of various cities where restaurants and clubs are concentrated, which are often the target of suicide bombers.
Security along the controversial 'separation fence' dividing the main Israeli cities from the Palestinian Territories is also being stepped up.
