Why decant a bottle of wine? There are two major reasons: 1) To extract an older wine off of its sediment (so you don't get gritty particles in your mouth) 2) To aerate a young or structured wine that needs some air to become more aromatically expressive.
In this video I will demonstrate how to decant a bottle. The important steps to follow are:
1) Do not disturb the sediment.
2) Prepare your space and have the right tools handy.
3) Carefully remove the cork.
4) Watch carefully for the particle sediment to reach the shoulder or neck of the bottle so you know when to stop pouring.
5) Enjoy the wine!
The tools you will need to decant a wine properly:
Decanter
Wine Glass
Flashlight, Candle, or Smartphone
Wine Key or Small Knife
(For older wines - optional) Ah-so or Durand
Napkins or Serviettes
(For wine stored on its side) Wine Cradle
Not many wines are built to age for longer than 10 years. Some general examples of age-worthy wines are: Bordeaux, Barolo, Brunello di Montalcino, Rioja, Napa Valley Cabernet, Hermitage, Port, Tokaj, German Riesling. The best way to know when to open a bottle of older wine is to contact the grower, winery, or merchant who produced the bottle. They will normally be happy to tell you when to crack open your prized bottle for maximum pleasure.
