arghanum is an arabic name for the byzantine organ. according to Ibn Khurdädhbih, writing in the 9th. c., it had bellows of skin and iron, and the word "arghanum" was interpreted as meaning 1000 voices. another arab writer says "when 1000 men sing, each with different sounds...that state of things they call arghanum"
the accordion has a remote family member in the argentinian bandoneón. technically speaking the two instruments are different, but there are several similar elements: both activate sound by bellows and both have buttons (no pianolike keyboard in this case) for right and left hand. the composer, himself originally from Argentina, has based some harmonic, melodic and gestural aspects of the work on a few notes of a very popular argentinian tango [El Monitoi, by Julio de Caro].
this piece reflects feelings of anger at the continuous destruction of nature by man. the first indication on the score - "agitated and wild, with repressed anger"- is a commentary 'sobre la belleza de lo salvaje' (on the beauty of the wild) and the exploitation and destruction of the wild by mankind.

this was originally composed for accordion and electronic sounds, and arranged for piano and electronic sounds by composer himself. few years ago, this work was rearranged for piano solo and premiered by me.
