(10 Nov 1978) At a ball in Salisbury marking the 13th anniversary of Prime Minister Ian Smith's Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) from Britain, Smith warns the United States and Britain that unless they move quickly to arrange a Rhodesian peace conference, he will conclude his own settlement. Hours before the event, a government gazette signed by acting President Jack Pithey proclaimed martial law in nine more areas, giving Rhodesian troops fighting black nationalist guerrillas, control of 65 per cent of the country. Here, guests enjoy the party, look forward to majority rule and Smith declares that his concern is with his country, the country of his birth.
