The gluteus maximus is the large butt muscle that extends the hip joint. It helps us to stand from a seated position, climb stairs and keep upright posture when standing.
Weakness can lead to lower back pain, hip pain and a number of problems down the kinetic chain.
This simple self-assessment is one that can be done without any tools. It may be helpful to perform in front of a mirror.
The key is watching the little bones in the front of your hips called the ASIS (anterior superior iliac spine). If this drops when you lift your foot then weakness is indicated in the glute that is holding you up.
