Allergy season is here and these are some really simple tips to remember.
1) Benadryl has significant short and long term consequences and is not the first line treatment for any allergy condition
2) Take your shoes off in the house so you don’t track pollen inside. Also if you are spending the day outside, opt to put your clothes in the laundry when you get home, and take a quick rinse in the shower. You may also want to stop using hair products because pollen will easily stick to it! Or, wear a hat.
3) There are lots of nasal sprays out there. Nasal corticosteroid sprays like Flonase or Nasonex take 5-7 days to kick in. Many times my patients say they don’t work, but that is because they are only using them when they feel stuffed and the sprays don’t work that way. If you prefer quicker acting relief, opt for a medication free sinus rinse, eucalyptus essential oil steam shower, or a nasal antihistamine spray like azelastine. Remember, nasal decongestants like afrin should only be used as needed and not for more than 5-7 days straight.
