The Toyota RAV4 and Subaru Forester are among the more popular compact SUVs. Outfitted with rugged-looking sheetmetal for extra curb appeal, these crossovers are practical, safe, and well-equipped. For these reasons, the RAV4 and Forester have found places in driveways throughout the nation. But which one of these ubiquitous SUVs is better?
When these competitors last met for a comparison test earlier this year, the Forester came out on top due to its impressive versatility and capability. However, the RAV4 lineup boasts a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid variant in addition to the workaday gas model, giving it an edge that the Forester simply couldn't match.
Subaru has just redesigned the Forester for 2025, breathing new life into this compact SUV rivalry. Fresh styling, modernized tech, and a stiffened chassis are all on the list of updated features. The automaker also announced that a hybrid model is on the way. Are the changes enough for Subaru to keep its lead? We dug deep into the specs of each model to determine how the 2025 Subaru Forester compares with the 2024 Toyota RAV4.
2025 Subaru Forester vs. 2024 Toyota RAV4: Gasoline Powertrains
Until the debut of the upcoming Forester Hybrid, every Forester comes equipped with a 2.5-liter flat-four-cylinder engine developing 180 hp and 182 lb-ft of torque. That represents a drop in 2 hp and a gain of 2 lb-ft of torque relative to the previous-generation model's output. A CVT, which Subaru says is retuned for smoothness and quietness, is standard, along with all-wheel drive. We're expecting a slight drop in performance, so expect 0-60 mph to arrive in a little over 8.5 seconds. Efficiency should be rated the same or come in just slightly below the outgoing SUV's 26/33 mpg rating.
