3:25 Theory Buried in the Triple H Era?
Austin Theory won the Money in the Bank briefcase, and it was the worst thing that ever happened to his career. That ain’t how this is supposed to work, Paul.
Monday night, in the main event of WWE Raw, Austin Theory cashed in his Money in the Bank Briefcase against Seth Rollins…for the WWE United States Championship. And he lost?
Hold up, nigga, what?
Remember when Money in the Bank was WWE’s most powerful star-making tool? It elevated Edge and RVD and CM Punk and Mr. Ken—and Dolph Ziggler for a few months, but on WWE Raw, Theory not only became the rare Money in the Bank Winner to lose a cash-in match, he didn’t even cash it in for a world title.
That’s like tearing your ACL in the Pro Bowl. That’s like, that’s like if the Home Run Derby was changed to the RBI Derby, and Theory still struck out. Hold up, I’m not done yet. That’s like paying $8 for a bootleg badge on South African Twitter, and getting it taking away from you. That’s like if the Jacksonville Jaguars lost a game for the AFC South Championship.
And this feels like the first true booking Black eye of the Triple H Era.
Go look at the short list of WWE Superstars who cashed in Money in the Bank and lost. The list is essentially Damian Sandow and Baron Corbin. Sandow’s career was ruined, and the jury is still out on Baron Corbin. Hell, they’ve rebooted him 10 times since then and now they need to call in JBL to do the Lord’s work.
WWE typically books Money in the Bank winners to lose under the notion that they can do jobs because they’ll be fine once they successfully cash in. Theory won his briefcase. He did his jobs. Then when it was time to cash in he lost again. Who got over here? What was accomplished? In a company filled with 40-year-olds, 22 to be exact, and is desperate for Star Power, creating a star out of a young Theory was WWE’s responsibility. Not only did they fail Theory, they failed the briefcase.
I get it, Theory isn’t that guy in the Triple H era, they made that abundantly clear. But don’t throw the briefcase out with the bath water. At least have Theory lose in a competitive match against Roman Reigns. What, Theory can’t do that but Logan Paul CAN? What, there was no world title cash-in because Theory didn’t have a thumbnail? WWE didn’t have to devalue Money in the Bank by having Theory cash in for a lesser title, only to lose that match.
That’s like winning the power ball lottery and spending it on cryptocurrency.
WWE needs new stars. By winning the Elusive Money in the Bank, nobody was in better position to become WWE’s next top star than Theory. The booking of Theory gives us an insight into WWE’s philosophy about creating top stars in the Triple H Era. Though it’s a small sample size, it’s eerily similar to the pitfalls that made it so tough to create new stars when Vince was in charge.
Is Austin Theory cooked? Does WWE know how to make new stars? Tell me in the comments!
