Ranges can be either gas, electric or dual fuel. This decision is made mostly upon your cooking preferences. Dual fuel ranges combine gas cooktops with electric ovens.

Based on their installation options, ranges can be freestanding, slide-in, or drop-in. Freestanding ranges are the most common range style. They fit anywhere in your kitchen independently and don't require any additional cabinetry work. Slide-in ranges are manufactured to fit flush with the countertop and are planned to slide into an open space in the cabinetry. Drop-in ranges require a prepared base into the cabinetry with a front panel of the cabinetry at the bottom, as they need to be dropped into the base, yet fit the cabinetry style. Convection ovens include a fan and an exhaust system that blow the hot oven air around the food and vent it out.

When purchasing a new range, make sure to measure its' width, height, and depth so it will fit the planned space in your kitchen, as well as passthrough doorways on its' way to the kitchen. There is no actual standard range size, but most of the models are 30 inches wide and 27 to 29 inches deep.
