KTM’s 250 SX-F is stronger than ever in terms of peak horsepower and torque figures when run on our in-house Dynojet 250i rear-wheel dynamometer.

After giving us a preview with its 250 SX-F Factory Edition and 450 SX-F Factory Edition near the end of MY22, KTM unveiled its next-generation motocross and cross-country models last year. Shared updates among the SX, SX-F, XC, and XC-F models included a new frame, subframe, swingarm, shock, and bodywork. Engine updates were specific to each displacement of two-stroke and four-stroke.
For the 250 SX-F, this meant a fully redesigned DOHC cylinder head, 3mm larger bore, 3.8mm shorter stroke, and slightly increased compression ratio. The prior-generation (2019–2022) model was already a top performer on the Dirt Rider dyno. Could KTM improve on that even further?
Yes. The 2023 model spun 41.5 hp and 19.5 lb.-ft. of torque—an increase of 1.7 hp and 0.4 lb.-ft. of torque at peak. In addition to making the most peak torque in the class, the 250 SX-F sits runner-up in maximum horsepower just behind its Austrian cousin, the Husqvarna FC 250. The orange machine’s fuel-injected liquid-cooled DOHC four-stroke 250cc engine was one of the reasons it fared so well in our 2023 250F Motocross Shootout.
“I really like the power delivery of the KTM, especially in the aggressive map 2 (green light illuminated) as it improves low-end,” test rider Michael Wicker said. “Like previous years, this engine suits riders who stay high in the rpm range, so I don’t recommend relying too heavily on its bottom-end. Nonetheless, the 250 SX-F is no slouch on overall power.”
