In Matebeleland South Province, Zimbabwe, UN Women through the EU- funded Spotlight Initiative programme is working with various stakeholders such as Civil Society Organisations, the government, traditional and religious leaders to address root caused and effects of gender-based violence in the province. Some of the initiative the programme is currently running include the capacitation of gender champions who are championing gender equality in the communities, promoting women’s economic empowerment, increasing GBV awareness and referral pathways for women and girls. The Spotlight Initiative’s overall objective is to eliminate all forms of violence and discrimination against women and girls.
In Umzingwane, Mawabeni ward 5, Matebeleland South Province, Spotlight Initiative programme has capacitated several gender champions with social accountability skills to engage various stakeholders including duty bearers, teachers, nurses and counsellors and police on how to work together to fight and response to gender-based violence, fight social norms that harm women and girls and promote gender equality in the district.

In Zimbabwe Spotlight Initiative represents an unprecedented global effort to invest in gender equality as a precondition and driver for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals at country level, with a particular focus on domestic and family violence, sexual and gender-based violence and harmful practices against women and girls.
