With a culinary lineage that goes back to Hotel Manju, supposedly the first table-service restaurant in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh in the sixties, Sashidhar Reddy and his wife, Vijayalakshmi, moved to Bengaluru from Nellore little over a year ago to open Vijay Kitchen, to serve dishes made to traditional family recipes. I visited this modest eatery set in the ground floor of their home in the suburb of Brookefield, where I not only savoured a delicious Andhra Bhojanam but also caught the making of an iconic Nellore Chepala Pulusu, a sour and spicy fish curry. Hope you enjoy this episode. Take care, stay safe and happy eating.
Plate Rice Meals
Served on a banana leaf tray, the rice meals is a simple but satisfying affair that consists of two vegetables, one dry and the other moist, a sambar, rasam and a nourishingly tasty pappu to keep company with the anam (steamed rice) and flavoured rice. There is also a sweet to round off the meal.

Chepala Pulusu (Sour and Spicy Fish Curry)
Made by his wife, Vijayalakshmi, to a recipe that goes back to Sasidhar Reddy’s grandmother, the Chepala Pulusu is a must-try here. A sour and spicy affair, the fish curry is made the evening before, thereby allowing for the fish to soak up the vivacious character of the tamarind, raw mangoes, chilli powder and the secret fenugreek spice blend.

RR Chilli Chicken
This dish should come with a ‘chilli hotness’ warning! Not for the faint-hearted, there is little else in this dish other than the chicken and tonnes of green chilli. The result is a unique taste that’s fiery at first but also the sort that endears itself once you get past the ‘suffering’! If you like it toned down, tell them so and they will toss it in some ghee.

Chicken Fry Biryani
A dish that was introduced as a means to consume leftover biryani rice, topped with chicken fry, the chicken fry biryani today is more popular than the Nellore biryani here. One can taste the warming flavours of the biryani spices in the kushka, the rice, that makes for a great combination with the robust tomato-onion rich masala of the chicken fry.
