Travel is just as much about the little moments as it is about the grand tours and sights. Trying new foods, learning a few words in a new language, laughing with a local as you struggle with the local currency. There is so much magic in daily life, in finding yourself out of your comfort zone, and in a world where every little thing is new and special. This video is extremely special to me, because it is documentation of our ordinary, and how by doing average things in a new place, it becomes EXTRAORDINARY!
We begin with a morning routine, making Turkish coffee (with grounds bought fresh from the world famous shop Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi) and preparing a Turkish breakfast of toast with kaymak (clotted cream) and honey (with honey comb pieces). We love being able to start our morning the Turkish way, even when we're going to spend the next several hours behind a laptop. After working for a few hours, we give an MTV Cribs style tour of our small basement AirBnb in Sultanahmet. The price and location are great, and it has everything we need!
Lunch time, and Ivan is dressing like he's heading to a Disney Channel audition to celebrate. Şehzade Cağ Kebap is one of our favorite spots in the city, their Cag Kebap made with perfectly roasted sliced lamb is delicious and unbelievably juicy!
Barbershop time! Ivan has been in desperate need of a haircut, so we head to a local shop where he literally says nothing about what he wants done other than "short" for the sides, and the barber perfectly executes his ideal haircut. He is pampered with a shave, face massage, and even ear candling, while I have a song bird sit on my head and play with my hair. Ivan's hour long cut and pampering costs the same as a quick very basic haircut in the US!
Obviously, grocery shopping is a basic part of digital nomad life, so we head to Show Market to SHOW you some of the interesting things we buy there. We always get fresh fruit, especially when the price of the most delicious cherries you'll ever taste is a small fraction of what mediocre cherries cost back home. We of course resupply on kaymak and fresh bread, decide to try out some cherry juice and halva, and buy frozen Manti, Turkish dumplings that make the perfect quick dinner on a work night! This whole haul costs less than $10.
After a shower and more work, it is time to order delivery on Getir, our food delivery app. Íkizler Pilavcisi is my FAVORITE dinner delivery spot. Their Turkish Chicken Rice with pickled peppers and chicken soup is NEXT LEVEL! We enjoy our dinner while Ivan is in headphones in a meeting, because digital nomad life is all about adapting haha.
We love getting to see the extraordinary in everyday life here in Istanbul! We are so in love with the people, food, and culture of this place! Welcome to madventure, we're MADison and iVEN (okay it is spelled Ivan, but pronounced like VENture) a husband and wife living the adventure we have been dreaming of, despite the fact that it makes us sound completely mad. For us that looks like traveling full time and starting our own businesses.
For Madison, a former reality TV producer, the dream is the madventure community, connecting people through travel, experiencing new cultures, and trying the best foods from carts, stands and restaurants all over the world. She hopes to encourage others to follow their maddest most adventurous dreams, whatever they may be!
For Ivan, a former NASA engineer, it is creating an engineering product that will change the world!
Travel and food are two of our biggest passions, so on this channel we will be traveling the world, and staying awhile to experience what life is actually like living other places. We're excited to have you on board for the delicious, culture filled, madventurous times that will ensue! Let's madventure! xoxo
