(9 Aug 2019) The espionage trial of two Cambodian journalists, who used to work for a United States' government-funded radio station, ended on Friday with the judge setting the verdict date for the end of the month.
Uon Chhin and Yeang Sothearin are charged with undermining national security by supplying information to a foreign state, punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
The men are former employees of Radio Free Asia. They were arrested in November 2017 during a crackdown on the media and political opponents of Prime Minister Hun Sen's government.
Rights groups have characterised the charges as a flagrant attack on freedom of the press.
Prosecutors based their case on the fact that the men were filing to RFA even though the station had already closed its Phnom Penh office.
Defence lawyers replied that they were filing stories that were already in the public domain and did not involve secrecy or national security.
As they left court both men said that they hoped they would get justice.
The verdict will be announced on 30 August.
