Seiza sitting is the formal, traditional way of sitting in Japan. It will release your shin muscles called the tibialis anterior and encourage plantar flexion of the ankle joint. It is also a great way to strengthen the spine, especially if you do it regularly. The more you practice seiza, the stronger your core muscles will become. The idea behind seiza is that you're able to keep your spine in a straight line by putting all of your weight on your heels.
