The annual Avignon Theatre Festival is widely acknowledged as one of the most important in Europe.
This year the performing arts spectacle celebrates its 67th anniversary.
Every year there are no less than 40 artistic projects including theatre, dance, music and fine arts. The majority of them are French premiers.
The event transforms Avignon and the main courtyard of the Palais des Papes into one of the biggest stages for performing arts.
The first big production was 'Walk About the Villages', a semi-autobiographical story written by Peter Handke. It is about a successful writer who returns to his native village and is directed by Stanislas Nordey.
Speaking about the egalitarian elements of the production he said: "In the courtyard of the Palais des Papes, there are always stories about kings and princes. I wanted to give a voice to the poor people, workers, small shopkeepers who live big tragedies just as kings and popes used to do."
