Please share and re-share!!!!
During Covid I had a lot of time to think about all my past experiences in life and what really brought me joy. Singing with these peeps has always been at the top of that list. Over the course of the last 25 years they have remained in my life as friends and inspirations. So when I proposed this little project many of them jumped at the chance. So off we went.
Getting everyone to record their track from all over Canada proved to be an interesting challenge. Compiling and mixing (Which is new to me) took a few weeks. And you can hear we still mix pretty damn good together. Now what to do next? Well, why not a video?! As the video submissions came in, and the tears flowed, things around me were starting to erupt.
The George Floyd protests started an important conversation nationally and globally. I started to think about these events everytime I was editing this video together. Do I put this video together as a passion project for me and my friends as a little keep sake? Or do I think bigger?
A conversation I had with one of my classmates, and the fear they feel daily for their children being of colour in a world that is stacked against them, made me really think. How do I use this platform I have been given to support the voices that need to be really heard right now.
So I started reaching out to my friends circle asking them to provide video clips to add. Everyone in this video is in my life as family, a friend, or an inspiration. From friends of all colours, to my family, to my chosen family in our LGTBQ+ community. And especially to my trans friends inspiring me to live authentically. These videos come from all over the world. Across Canada, New York, Vegas, England and Europe. Thank you to all my friends for being part of this.
I recognize my privilege, I am sitting listening to stories, and most importantly I am doing the personal work needed to be the best ally I can be. My hope is that this video, showing that love is love, and that we are all part of the human race, allows you to start having the important conversation with yourself or your children. All lives can not matter until we start recognizing that certain lives need to be elevated.
We may have equality on paper and in law, but we do not have equity or justice for all. Especially black people, indigenous people, and trans people of colour. The fruits from the tree of life have been grown in the direction of white people in our nation. These fruits are essentially available to all, but the branches have been lowered for white people to access them freely and easily. People of colour and the trans community have to work that much harder to have what is so easily given to white people. From walking free from harrasement and fear of the police, to opportunities, to children growing up in vastly different worlds. We need to spread the sunshine to all branches, everyone needs to be offered the fruits of life with the same ease you and myself experience.
So show this video to your kids, have the conversation. Show them that Gay is ok, Trans is beautiful, and that we need to see colour, really see it. The only way to change is to listen to the stories that are different then your own, to educate ourselves. So start getting uncomfortable, for it's in discomfort that we begin to churn the earth. We have the opportunity right now, we are at the edge of a paradigm shift, so start asking yourself "what am I doing to perpetuate my biases?", and what can I do to uplift and support others? Now is the time, No day but to today!! (See what I did there?)
Thank you for listening.
