In the past, I used to apply a watered-down Soft-Gel solution by Golden Paints to protect the painting in case the varnish ever had to be removed. Now, Golden Paints makes an Isolation Coat product, which avoids having to dissolve all the lumps. Using a wide brush and going from the centre out avoids splattering and pools at the edges. Don't overdo it and don't go back as it starts to dry fast. Just another glimpse of studio life.
If using a brush-on varnish, it's applied in the same way, in one direction and then the other (3 coats is what I usually do).
