The Public Theater is the only theater in New York that produces Shakespeare, the classics, musicals, contemporary and experimental pieces in equal measure.
Our work is rooted in the vision of our founder, Joe Papp, who believed the theater is an essential cultural force. For more than 60 years, we have created theater for one of the largest and most diverse audience bases in New York City, from our landmark downtown home at Astor Place, to the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, home to our beloved Free Shakespeare in the Park.
But the strength of The Public is derived directly from the strength of our community. We are the theater of and for the people. We are artist driven. We are fundamentally democratic. Most importantly, we are one Public.
