String Lake Loop Hike at Grand Teton National Park – 8/9/2022
QUICK FACTS
- 3.8 miles, loop
- 285 ft. elevation gain
- Trailhead elevation is 6875 ft.
String Lake is the second of two hikes we did on our first trip to Grand Teton National Park. Due to its low elevation gain, this is a great hike if you want to spend a couple hours and see some great views without tiring yourself out.
You’ll see the lake and the mountains beyond from many angles, including Teewinot Mountain, Grand Teton, Mt. Owen, and Mt. Moran. The mountains will be reflected in the lake’s surface, too.
This is a loop—many recommend hiking it in the morning. Half the trail goes along the lake on the east side; on the west, you climb up higher and have great views and wildflowers in summer. Many suggest hiking it counterclockwise in order to see the lake views in the early morning light.
Because the hike is near water, you have a decent chance of seeing moose.
CAUTION
- This is bear country. Carry bear spray, make noise, and pay attention.
- Don’t get close to moose. They can get aggressive.
- This is a very popular spot with people kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, due to the lake being close to the parking lot. Go early to get parking.
