From the start of "Cell" (2009, Timeline-ATTF).
What if Eli Roth's unproduced and cancelled film adaptation of Stephen King's novel "Cell" wouldn't be cancelled and it would be released on October 31, 2009?
In 2006, Dimension Films had bought the film rights to the book and would produce a film to be directed by Eli Roth for a 2009 release: "Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski are writing it. They wrote 1408, Ed Wood, and The People vs. Larry Flynt. And now that I'm getting closer to locking picture on Hostel: Part II, I've been meeting with them more regularly. They're working on the draft." Roth, a fan of the novel, said he wanted to do a Roland Emmerich-style film that shows the worldwide collapse of civilization and its immediate aftermath, something that most zombie films did not show. Roth exited the project in 2009, saying: "There was just sort of a difference in opinion on how to make the film and what the story should be, and there's a different direction the studio wants to go with it. It was very friendly because it's the Weinsteins, they made Inglourious Basterds and we're all friends. I said, 'I'm not really interested in doing the film this way. You guys go ahead and I'm going to make my own films.' I've also learned that I really am only interested in directing original stories that I write, that's another thing I learned through that whole process."
