The United Nations Security Council has heard that any damage to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear facility in Ukraine could spell catastrophe for the entire region and beyond. That was the stark warning delivered by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres after an inspection team from the International Atomic Energy Agency was able to visit Europe's largest nuclear plant last week.
The plant is under the control of Russian forces and operated by Ukrainian personnel and has been the scene of ongoing shelling between both sides of the conflict.
The IAEA says the situation continues to represent a constant threat to nuclear safety and security with a potential impact on critical safety functions that may lead to radiological consequences.
