Jean-Bédel Bokassa will perhaps mostly be remembered chiefly for an oversized Napoleon complex and his love for everything French. In 1972, he sensationally declared his presidency would be indefinite and two years after that, he declared the republic’s transition to a monarchy calling it the Central African Empire, with the promulgation of the imperial constitution and an extravagant coronation as Emperor Jean-Bédel Bokassa I, which he tried to pattern after that of his hero, Napoleon Bonarpate, provoking both shock and contemptuous laughter from outsiders. Bokassa liked to describe himself as an absolute monarch and banned the use of the words democracy & elections in the country. This video explains how Bokassa lived up to the infamous title of the insanely mad emperor you've never heard of.
