Nestled in vast stretches of the Araku range is the Chompi village. Home to the members of the Paroja community, this village is located in the Araku valley Mandal of the Visakhapatnam district in Andhra Pradesh.
The men and women here practice and perform one of the most famous dance forms in Andhra Pradesh, the Dhimsa dance. Originating from the Koraput district of the neighboring state of Odisha, Dhimsa is one of the countless traditional tribal dances of the country and is performed by the women of the Paroja caste, while the male members play the music.
Performed during various festivities like weddings, pujas, and other ceremonies, this dance form has many dierent varieties. The dance has a melodious background score thanks to the unique instruments used in the dance. Some of these instruments are Kirdi, Jodukommulu, Dappu, Mori.
